People think a stronger brand means a stronger lift. Actually, a crane lifts what its configuration allows, regardless of the name on the chassis. Brand matters for support and parts; load chart matters for safety.
If the thing you are moving is wet concrete, the conversation changes. A crane with a bucket can handle small pours, but a Zoomlion concrete pump is often the more efficient tool for slabs, walls, foundations, columns, and high-rise work.
A concrete pump pushes concrete through a delivery line. There are two main families. A boom pump is mounted on a truck and has a remote-controlled placing boom. Honest limitation: a concrete pump is only as productive as the concrete supply in front of it. If ready-mix trucks cannot arrive at a steady pace, the pump will wait. That is not machine failure; that is a pour plan problem. Match the pump output to the delivery schedule, not to the highest number in the brochure.
A boom lift is an aerial work platform with an articulating or telescopic boom that lifts people, tools, and light material in a platform. It differs from a scissor lift because it can reach out and over obstacles, not just straight up.
If you have asked 'what is a boom lift?', the simplest answer is this: it is the machine you choose when your problem is putting a worker into a precise elevated position. Exterior cladding, glass installation, electrical work, pipe runs, and maintenance jobs all use boom lifts because the basket can move around the structure.
Here is where I add a caution. A boom lift is not a crane. The platform has a rated capacity, but that rating covers people, tools, and light material inside the platform. It is not a license to hoist heavy, awkward components. If the load is too large for the basket, use a crane. And a crane is not a substitute for a boom lift when workers need to stay in position for long periods.
Authority note: In the United States, boom lifts used in construction fall under OSHA's aerial lift rule, 29 CFR 1926.453, and the current ANSI A92 series. As of January 2025, operator training and daily inspection are part of the expected setup. If a rental vendor does not provide those, that is a red flag.
When a project manager asks me to source equipment, I use three questions.
The first question points you to the machine family. The second and third tell you the size and configuration. If the main item is people, choose a boom lift. People think that the machine with the highest capacity produces the fastest schedule. The reality is that the best-matched machine produces the fastest schedule. An oversized crane has higher mobilization cost and site requirements. An undersized pump creates waiting time. For dense city projects, add one more filter. In New York, searching for 'crane club nyc' can surface informal conversations about operators and street access. Those conversations are useful for local context, but they are not a substitute for a manufacturer load chart, a certified operator, or city permits.
I learned about machine selection the hard way years ago. I told a rental vendor we needed a 30-ton crane, and the vendor heard something different by '30-ton crane' than I meant. The mismatch showed up when the load chart arrived with the wrong configuration. We lost a day. Now I send the lift weight, radius, and access notes before I ask for availability.
